Queensland Motorcycle Roadworthy Standards: A Guide for Riders
Ensuring your motorcycle meets Queensland’s roadworthy standards is essential for both your safety and legal compliance. Here’s a breakdown of the key areas inspected during a TMR-approved Motorcycle Safety Certificate inspection:
1. Brakes
- Brake Operation: Both front and rear brakes must function effectively and independently.
- Brake Pads/Shoes: Wear must be within acceptable limits, ensuring adequate stopping power.
- Brake Lines: No leaks, damage, or deterioration allowed.
- Brake Fluid: Fluid level and condition are checked.
2. Wheels and Tires
- Tires: Adequate tread depth, no cracks, cuts, or bulges. Correct tire type and size for the motorcycle.
- Wheels: No damage to spokes, rims, or bearings. Wheels must be secure and rotate freely.
3. Steering and Suspension
- Steering: Smooth operation with no excessive play or binding.
- Suspension: Shocks and forks must be in good condition with no leaks or damage.
- Frame: Inspected for any cracks, damage, or unauthorized modifications.
4. Lights and Reflectors
- Headlights: Correct operation of high and low beam, proper aim and brightness.
- Taillights and Brake Lights: Must illuminate correctly and be clearly visible.
- Indicators: Proper function and visibility, including correct lens color.
- Reflectors: Mandatory red rear reflectors and other reflectors as required by the motorcycle’s date of manufacture.
5. Engine and Exhaust
- Exhaust: Securely mounted with no excessive leaks or noise.
- Oil Leaks: Engine must be free of significant oil leaks.
- Fuel System: No leaks or damage to fuel lines, tank, or fuel cap.
6. Other Essential Components
- Chain/Drive Belt: Adjusted within specifications, good condition with proper lubrication.
- Footrests: Securely mounted and in good condition.
- Stands: The center stand and sidestand (if fitted) must operate correctly and safely.
- Mirrors: At least one rearview mirror required on each side for motorcycles manufactured after 1975. Mirrors must provide a clear rearward view.
- Controls: Throttle, clutch, and all levers must operate smoothly and correctly.
